P. 114

Look at these sets of pencils. Each set has four pencils.

                                                                                4 + 4 + 4 = 12

Three sets of 4 make 12.

                                                                                Three 4s are 12.

When we add the same number again and again, it is called repeated

addition. Instead of adding the same number again and again, we can

multiply to find out the total number of pencils.

Repeated addition of the same number is called multiplication. The sign

        of multiplication is ‘×’.

For the above example, we write

              3 × 4 = 12.

We read it as three times 4 is 12 or 3 multiplied by 4 is 12.

The result 12 is called the product.

                   The answer we get on

                  multiplication is called

                          the product.
