We are blessed to live in the era of digital technologies where we
can do many tasks such as shopping, ticket reservation, and learning
from the comfort of our homes, using various digital devices
such as tablets, laptops, or smartphones. The development of
computers started from abacus and early mechanical computing
devices and has now reached the point where supercomputers
and smart devices are actually in use.
Till now, there is no program that can make machines independent
like a human being. Some programs have attained the performance
levels of human experts and professionals in performing certain specific tasks. These programs make the
machines intelligent.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the booming technologies of this digital era. Most of the companies use AI to
accomplish tedious or complex tasks which are difficult for human beings. In general, the term ‘AI’ is a process of
teaching machines to learn, think, decide, and act like a human being. The process of developing machines has
different stages that are collectively known as ‘AI Project Cycle.’ Let’s explore the chapter to know more about
different stages of an AI Project.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

In 1956, the term "AI" was first conceptualized by American computer scientist John McCarthy at the Dartmouth
Conference. Artificial Intelligence is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines or computer-
controlled robots that behave intelligently using skills associated with human intelligence.

The main goal of Artificial Intelligence is to aid human capabilities and help us in making advanced or smart
decisions with far-sighted vision. AI, has enough potential to increase the comfortability and convenience in
human life through various smart devices or machines.

Nowadays, Artificial Intelligence is being used mostly by companies to improve their process efficiencies,
automate resource-heavy tasks, and to make business predictions based on complex data. The two main goals
of an AI system are:

u Creating Expert System: An Expert System is a computer system that exhibits intelligent behaviour to solve
complex problems related to a particular task, similar to humans. MYCIN, DENDRAL, and CaDet are some
popular expert systems. In general, expert systems are widely used in the field of medicine.
